Cancun, Mexico – Where Adventure and History Meet!
I recently spent 10 days in Cancun, Mexico. I am not going to try to pretend that I was way overdue for a vacation. Three years of working like a dog, leaves a girl tired and needing a change of scenery! The trip was a family adventure (my parents, my sister, brother-in-law and niece and nephew) to celebrate my Mom’s 60th birthday! Although we had a tough time actually getting to Cancun thanks to a crack windshield that forced the plane to be turned around and Hurricane Alex making itself visible, we eventually arrived and began celebrating!!
We stayed at the Marriott Casa Magna in the hotel zone of Cancun for one night and then made our way down to Puerto Aventuras, where we stayed for a 9 days. The hotel zone of Cancun is typical Spring Break Mexico with nightclubs, bartenders with whistles and hurricane glasses galore! Although the Marriott Casa Magna is slightly outside of the party zone, which offered us a nice place to start the adventure. With 15 pieces of luggage, we loaded up the mini van and headed south to Puerto Aventuras, a planned, gated community south of Playa Del Carmen. Puerto Aventuras offers a perfect location for exploring Riviera Maya. We were an easy 20 minute drive from Akamal (home of the sea turtles), Playa Del Carmen (great shopping), Tulum (Mayan ruins) and some of the best adventure parks on the planet. The biggest highlight of the trip besides the beautiful beaches, the warm hospitality and the great history of the Mayan people, is by far an adventure park called Explore!
